First step in prevention of rodents in your home is knowledge &#8211; so here are the top three kinds of rodents the regular Floridian might find in their house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>House Mice<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looks: Have shorter hair that is light brown or gray\/black in color, with lighter bellies.<\/p>\n<p>Size: Body: 3.0 &#8211; 3.9\u00a0in; Tail Length:\u00a02.0 &#8211; 3.9\u00a0in; Weight:\u00a01.4 &#8211; 1.6\u00a0oz<\/p>\n<p>What do they like to eat? Outside,\u00a0mice prefer to eat cereal and seeds, but they will also eat insects, nuts and fruits.\u00a0Inside structures, mice will consume almost any human food, but prefer grain based products.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of an Infestation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gnaw marks<\/li>\n<li>Droppings (1\/8-1\/4 inch long, they are rod shaped and pointed on the ends)<\/li>\n<li>Tracks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Roof Rat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looks: Smaller of the two common rats.\u00a0Brown with black intermixed; Gray, white or black underside<\/p>\n<p>Size: Body: 6 &#8211; 8 in; Tail Length: 6 &#8211; 8 in; Weight: 5 &#8211; 9 ounces but can get up to 12 ounces<\/p>\n<p>What do they like to eat? They will eat meat and grain, but their preferences are\u00a0fresh\u00a0fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. They will eat snails,\u00a0slugs, and insects as well.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of an infestation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Noises in the attic or house walls and damaged electrical wires<\/li>\n<li>Gnaw Marks<\/li>\n<li>Greasy Rub Marks<\/li>\n<li>Droppings (1\/2&#8243; and pointed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Norway Rat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looks: The biggest rat.\u00a0Brown with scattered black hairs; gray to white underside.<\/p>\n<p>Size: Body: 6 &#8211; 8 in; Weight: 12 &#8211; 16 ounces<\/p>\n<p>What do they like to eat?\u00a0Norway rats will eat nearly any type of food. When given a choice, they select a nutritionally balanced diet, choosing\u00a0fresh,\u00a0wholesome\u00a0items over\u00a0stale\u00a0or contaminated foods.
